Finally they’re here! The highly anticipated addition to the Vokey wedge dynasty has been released. To be fair to Titleist’s marketers they haven’t claimed to have re-invented the wheel with the new SM8 range but they have no doubt made some valuable but subtle improvements.
What’s New with the SM8?
Titleist have created their most forgiving wedge yet by, with the use of high density tungsten, moving the centre of gravity forward thus increasing the MOI all whilst retaining a great feeling wedge.
On a cosmetic level, note the new design has plenty of room for personalisation also, meaning these wedges can be truly yours. What’s really great for golfers to note, however, is that the six grind options are available along with a plethora of loft options.
Who is the SM8 Wedge Aimed At?
Vokey wedges have always been attractive for a wide number of golfers and these changes have solidified this. The different sole and grind options for one make this wedge range accessible for all and the custom options available allow for the correct shaft, loft and lie options making the SM8 range playable for all.

Whilst the grind and bounce is important, remember that the loft of the wedge is also a vital consideration. The best way to get the lofts correct is to work out the average distance your pitching wedge is travelling and then find out where your gaps are. With the strength of loft on some modern pitching wedges, it could mean a stronger lofted ‘gap’ wedge than you’re used to.
